Windows recovery or BitLocker prompt

Protect data before resetting Windows or replacing a drive.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

A recovery screen can follow an update, startup fault or hardware change. BitLocker may ask for a recovery key even when the drive is otherwise healthy.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Write down the exact message and stop before choosing Reset, Format or Reinstall.
  2. 2Check Microsoft's documented locations for your recovery key using your own account or organisation.
  3. 3Confirm what backups exist and whether they contain the files you need.

What to avoid

Never send your recovery key in a quote or chat. Do not repeatedly reset a failing drive or initialise it to make it appear.

Next step

Send the laptop model and a photo of the screen with any personal codes hidden.

What I can help with

A drive upgrade or compatible clone can be discussed after access and backup checks. Data recovery and account bypass are excluded.
