Laptop fan loud or rattling

Tell normal high-load fan noise from a possible obstruction or failing fan.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

A steady rush of air under heavy work differs from grinding, clicking or rattling at idle. Thermal load and physical fan damage require different work.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Save work and restart, then listen before opening demanding apps.
  2. 2Check that vents are unobstructed and the laptop sits on a firm surface.
  3. 3Note whether the sound changes with load or begins immediately at power-on.

What to avoid

Do not push an object into vents or run a rattling fan for long periods if it may be striking something.

Next step

Send the model and a short recording of the sound if convenient.

What I can help with

A cleaning or fan replacement may be considered after compatibility checks; board faults are excluded.
