Laptop won't turn on

Identify whether a laptop has a power, display or startup problem.

What the symptoms may tell you

No lights or fan differs from lights with a blank display, and both differ from a Windows recovery screen. Those clues guide the next safe check.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Check the power outlet, adapter and cable for obvious damage; use only a compatible supply.
  2. 2Disconnect removable peripherals and note whether charging lights, fans or keyboard backlight appear.
  3. 3If the screen stays dark, try an external display only if you already have a safe compatible connection.

What to avoid

Do not open or charge a swollen or liquid-damaged laptop. Do not repeatedly restart a machine whose drive is clicking or holding unique data.

Next step

Send the model, charger specification, what lights appear and the last thing shown on screen.

What I can help with

Battery and selected component repairs are model-checked; board-level power repair is outside scope.
