Laptop overheating

Understand high heat, throttling and shutdowns before requesting cleaning or parts.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

Warmth under load is normal; repeated shutdowns, burning smells or a hot swelling case are not. Dust, blocked vents, software load and hardware faults can look similar.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Use the laptop on a firm surface with clear vents and let it cool after shutdown.
  2. 2Check whether a particular app causes sustained heavy processor use.
  3. 3Record when the heat occurs, whether the fan runs and whether the device shuts down.

What to avoid

Do not block vents, spray liquid into them or continue using a swollen or damaged battery.

Next step

Send the model and a description of temperature, fan behaviour and shutdowns.

What I can help with

Cleaning or component work is quoted only after model and condition review; no cooling outcome is guaranteed.
