iPhone speaker quiet or distorted

Troubleshoot low call volume, muffled sound and crackling before replacing a speaker.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

The earpiece used for calls and the loudspeaker used for media are different paths. A problem in only one app or with Bluetooth connected may not be a failed speaker.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Compare a normal call, speakerphone and a local media file at a safe volume.
  2. 2Disconnect Bluetooth audio and remove a case that covers an opening.
  3. 3Check that the opening is dry and visibly clear without pushing anything into its mesh.

What to avoid

Do not use compressed air, sharp tools or cleaning fluid in speaker openings, especially after liquid exposure.

Next step

Tell me whether the fault affects calls, speakerphone, alarms or media, and whether it followed a drop or liquid.

What I can help with

Speaker replacement is model-checked. Sound faults can also come from software, microphones or board circuitry.
