iPhone buttons not working

Practical checks for an unresponsive side, volume or mute control.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

A stiff button after a drop may indicate case damage, while one that works intermittently may involve an internal flex. Software can also affect what a button appears to do.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Remove a case that could press or obstruct the button.
  2. 2Restart the phone if possible and test the button in more than one context.
  3. 3Note whether the control feels stuck, loose or normal and whether the frame is bent.

What to avoid

Do not force a jammed button, drip cleaner into it or continue charging a device with related swelling.

Next step

Send the model, which button is affected and whether there was a drop or previous repair.

What I can help with

Button replacement is assessed by model and condition; a damaged frame or board fault may need a specialist.
