Laptop cloning and data transfer

Prepare a safe transfer plan before replacing a laptop drive.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

Cloning copies a compatible working drive, including its system layout. A failing or unreadable drive may need data recovery instead; a clone is not an independent backup.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Back up important files separately and verify you can open a sample from that backup.
  2. 2Check the source drive's used space, encryption and health before choosing a target SSD.
  3. 3List any apps, licences or accounts that must still work after the transfer.

What to avoid

Do not format the original drive or send a recovery key in a chat message. Stop repeated attempts on a clicking or unreadable drive.

Next step

Send the laptop model, source and target drive sizes and whether Windows or macOS currently starts normally.

What I can help with

Straightforward cloning from a healthy compatible drive can be quoted; failing-drive recovery is not offered.
