PS4 stuck in Safe Mode

Approach a PS4 Safe Mode loop without accidentally erasing stored data.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

A console repeatedly returning to Safe Mode can have a software, storage or power problem. The available menu options have different effects, including some that erase data.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Photograph the exact screen and any error code.
  2. 2Check the official PlayStation description of each Safe Mode option before selecting it.
  3. 3Confirm whether saved games are already backed up to supported storage or cloud service.

What to avoid

Do not select Initialise or reinstall system software as a trial when the only copy of important data may be on the console.

Next step

Send the PS4 model, the displayed message and whether the internal drive has ever been replaced.

What I can help with

A PS4 storage job may be considered after diagnosis and an agreed backup plan; board repair is excluded.
