Console fan loud or rattling

Tell ordinary cooling noise from a possible blocked or damaged fan.

See safe first checks

What the symptoms may tell you

Fan speed often rises in demanding games. Grinding, clicking, scraping or a fan that does not spin needs a different assessment.

Safe checks to try first

  1. 1Note whether the noise occurs only in a particular game or from startup.
  2. 2Check the console has clear ventilation and is not enclosed in a cabinet.
  3. 3Record a short sound sample and note any overheating warning.

What to avoid

Do not poke tools into a moving fan or use compressed air that spins it at excessive speed.

Next step

Send the console model, sound sample and any shutdown or temperature message.

What I can help with

A model-checked clean can address accessible dust, but a failing fan or board fault may need other work.
